Autumn sunsets

Treating yourself to a moment of relaxation, of authentic contact with nature and pure marvel

‘Il carnato del cielo sveglia oasi al nomade d’amore’.

Lightly paraphrased – so much is lost in translation! – ‘The sky’s blush awakens an oasis in the nomad of love’. Giuseppe Ungaretti wrote it in 1916, somewhere in the Karst mountains. We like to think that these short, intense verses were born in front of an equally beautiful spectacle to what can be admired at the foot of the Pale di San Martino in autumn. The beauty of the peaks and the rose colour they take in the most romantic hour of the day will leave you breathless and will make you recover all the energy you spent during a day in the mountains.

Among the most magical places where you can enjoy the spectacle of alpenglow is Baita Segantini, located above Passo Rolle, right at the foot of Cimon della Pala. You also cannot miss the sunset in Calaita, a location nestled halfway between San Martino di Castrozza and Valle del Vanoi, where the Pale di San Martino reflect in the water of the lake, creating a sensational – to say the least – play of light and reflections.

They are united by the presence of a lake (very small but at the same time very charming is the one next to the Baita, larger and more mysterious the one of Calaita) where you can admire, as if on the surface of an upside-down painting, the fiery reflection of the Pale di San Martino at the time of twilight. And if it is an autumn sunset, everything becomes even more evocative, with the sun slowly abandoning the scene, illuminating what is a true palette of warm autumn colours.
