The earliest records of the Primiero Valley date back to the year 1000, but excavations near the Archpriest Church of Fiera

reveal settlements already in the 5th–6th centuries, with a stable and thriving community. After several changes of rule, in 1373 Primiero came under Tyrolean–Austrian control. In 1401, Duke Leopold granted the valley to the Counts of Welsperg, who developed the mining industry, making Primiero one of the most important metallurgical centres in the Austrian Empire.

During this period, Fiera became a hub for trade and bilingual culture.

During the Napoleonic era, the valley briefly passed under Bavarian rule before returning to Austria. After the Congress of Vienna, it was annexed to Trentino and, following the end of the First World War, became part of Italy.

Today, the Primiero Valley consists of the municipalities of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza, Mezzano, and Imer, which together with Canal San Bovo and Sagron Mis form the Comunità di Primiero (Primiero Community).
