Experiencing the mountains is thrilling — hiking, climbing, via ferratas — but it always requires caution and awareness. For this reason, the Dolomites UNESCO Foundation and other organizations (Mountain Rescue, Alpine Guides, SAT, and Mountain Hut Keepers) have launched the project “Take care in the Mountains”, featuring this decalogue and thematic guides. Golden rule: Always use the right equipment (for altitude and season) and follow the advice of those who live in the mountains.
ENJOY the Mountains:
- Plan your route: Study the itinerary carefully, download the GPS track for offline use, and identify refreshment or shelter points.
- Know your limits: Choose routes suited to your fitness and experience (length, elevation gain, difficulty). Leave no trace — keep nature clean.
- Use proper gear: Technical boots, a waterproof jacket, water bottle, food, headlamp, and first aid kit are essential. Add specialized gear for climbing or via ferrata routes.
- Check the weather: Review local forecasts, especially before climbing routes or ferratas — make sure conditions are stable.
- Go with others: Hiking with company ensures mutual support and quick help in case of unexpected events, even minor ones.
- Inform someone about your plan: Tell family, friends, or hut keepers your intended route and estimated return time.
- Rely on experts: Ask Alpine Guides, hut managers, or local authorities for up-to-date information on trail conditions.
- Follow trail signs: Pay attention to signposts (numbers and destinations) and the red-and-white trail markers. Always carry a map.
- Don’t be afraid to turn back: If you’re tired, uncertain about the route, or if the weather worsens, it’s safer to retrace your steps than to risk continuing.
