Croda Granda - Agnèr Wild Trek

Discover the wildest side of the Pale di San Martino

Croda Granda – Agnèr Wild Trek is a circular trekking route that embraces the border area between Trentino and Veneto, unfolding through a multi-stage itinerary at the foot of two of the most iconic peaks in the eastern sector of the Pale di San Martino. Both the starting point and the finish are located in Sagron Mis, a small municipality within the Primiero community.

THREE STAGES, ONE UNIQUELY CAPTIVATING LANDSCAPE

Discover the stages of the trek here and let yourself be captivated by the extraordinary beauty of the Dolomites.

The first stage immediately offers two alternatives: a more demanding high-altitude route which, from Passo Cereda, follows the Alta Via No. 2 trail up to Forcella d’Oltro before descending to Malga Cavallera; or a lower-altitude itinerary that still leads to the same destination while crossing the Domadore area, ideal for gradually becoming familiar with the surrounding alpine environment.

The second stage connects Malga Cavallera to Rifugio Scarpa along a high-level trail that is not particularly difficult yet exceptionally panoramic, offering privileged views of the imposing southern face of Croda Granda. The third and final stage descends from the slopes of Mount Agnèr towards the valley floor, crossing the municipality of Gosaldo with its small and characteristic hamlets before returning to Sagron Mis.

This is a fascinating, unconventional and truly wild trekking experience, developing along lesser-known paths compared to the central and northern sectors of the Pale di San Martino, and offering immersion in an even more pristine and untouched natural environment.

Upon request, quotations are also available for additional pre- and post-tour overnight stays in mountain huts, as well as for the accompaniment of a certified alpine guide or mid-mountain hiking guide for one or more days.

Tutte le tappe nel dettaglio

11.1 km · 5:15 h · Elevation gain +1112 m · Elevation loss -543 m

The first stage of the Croda Granda – Agnèr Wild Trek begins at Chalet Giasenei in Sagron Mis and climbs towards Passo Cereda via Matiuz and Malga Fratton. From there, the route continues along the spectacular Trail 718 “delle Regade”, ascending to an altitude of 2,050 metres beneath Cima d’Oltro. Once Forcella d’Oltro has been reached, the route leaves Trail 718 and follows the descending Trail 720 beneath Punta del Caldrolon, eventually arriving at Malga Cavallera (1,680 m), the destination of this first stage.

Although it involves a significant elevation gain, Trail 718 — part of the Alta Via No. 2 of the Dolomites — crosses an exceptionally scenic landscape characterised by countless stone pinnacles of varying shapes and sizes.

Domadore Variant

11.3 km · 4:20 h · Elevation gain +795 m · Elevation loss -234 m

An alternative variation of the first stage of the Croda Granda – Agnèr Wild Trek, avoiding the ascent along the Sentiero delle Regade by passing through the Domadore area.

The initial section from Sagron Mis to Passo Cereda remains unchanged from the official route and leads from Chalet Giasenei to Passo Cereda via Matiuz and Malga Fratton. From Rifugio Passo Cereda (1,369 m a.s.l.), the route follows the SS347 main road towards Primiero for approximately 250 metres. On the right-hand side begins CAI Trail No. 718: a narrow paved road that continues through the green basin of Prati Brunet and leads to the locality of Bastie.

At this point, Trail No. 718 – Alta Via 2 branches off to the left, while the route continues straight ahead onto a forest road. Crossing a wide clearing, the track gently descends towards the locality of Le Frate. At the hairpin bend, turn left onto a clearly marked trail with the traditional red-and-white CAI signs, then keep left. The path to the right leads instead to the chapel dedicated to Saint Rita, immersed in the tranquillity of this untouched alpine landscape.

6.8 km · 2:45 h · Elevation gain +358 m · Elevation loss -299 m

The second stage of the Croda Granda – Agnèr Wild Trek begins at Malga Cavallera (1,680 m). The route climbs along Trails 720 and 777 towards the nearby Bivacco Menegazzi. From here, Trail 773 leads first to Passo Col di Luna (1,747 m) and then continues — always following Trail 773 — to Rifugio Scarpa (1,735 m).

This is a route characterised by numerous ascents and descents while remaining at a mid-altitude level, offering magnificent panoramic views of both Croda Granda and Monte Agnèr throughout the journey.

15 km · 5:35 h · Elevation gain +636 m · Elevation loss -1247 m

The third stage of the Croda Granda – Agnèr Wild Trek descends from Rifugio Scarpa towards Forcella Aurine before continuing through Don di Gosaldo and eventually returning to Sagron Mis (Chalet Giasenei).

From Rifugio Scarpa, the route reaches the nearby Malga Losch before descending through the spectacular and wild Val de Zoppei. Once the junction at approximately 1,300 metres has been reached, the trail climbs briefly in order to cross the Rozol stream and join the forest road (Trail 771) leading towards Frassenè and Mason del Bet. From here, the route continues to the right along the forest road towards Domadore.

After reaching the paved road, the trail climbs gently towards the final mountain huts before crossing a bridge and continuing along the path known as “Belvedere”, eventually reaching the localities of Col Fres. Following CAI Trail No. 733, the route arrives at the village of Forcella Aurine via a paved road.

Shortly below the junction, turn right onto the municipal road running parallel to the SP347 for around one hundred metres, until a wide trail begins across old meadows surrounded by young fir trees.

The route continues almost to a wooden crucifix, where it turns left and crosses the provincial road. On the valley side embankment begins an unmarked yet clearly visible path descending towards the Val dei Nogher. The trail follows the valley while always remaining on its right-hand side, without ever crossing it, winding peacefully through cool woodland until reaching the old slopes of the Campaz ski lift.
