The mountains at higher elevations are perfect not only for trekking enthusiasts but also for families who want to share the thrill of panoramic views between 2,000 and 2,500 meters above sea level. San Martino di Castrozza makes it easy to reach the peaks with convenient lift systems. The Alpe Tognola chairlift takes you up to 2,100 m, while the Colverde cable car and Rosetta cableway reach the incredible Altopiano delle Pale di San Martino, soaring up to 2,500 m. At the summits, both children and adults can enjoy excellent views, refuel at mountain huts, embark on easy family-friendly treks, or have fun in special baby parks.
Breathtaking panoramas for the whole family
alpe tognola
The Tognola lift, just steps from the town center, connects 1,450 m to 2,100 m.
Up top, the “Alpe delle Marmotte” Park is free and open to everyone, where children can play on slides, nets, and tunnels. The park’s mascots, marmots Marco and Martina, accompany the little guests on their adventures.
For walking enthusiasts, a mini-trek to the Dolomites Balcony offers spectacular views of the Pale di San Martino. The panoramic balcony, inaugurated in 2016, is reachable in 15 minutes from the lift or 3 hours from San Martino. The route is also suitable with a child carrier backpack, thanks to safe and well-maintained trails, but not recommended for strollers.
Rifugio Tognola is a starting point for hikes suitable for all ages. Enjoy local dishes, child-friendly menus, and a terrace with an exceptional view of the Dolomites.

A short walk leads to Rifugio Pedrotti alla Rosetta, perfect for experiencing the alpine hut atmosphere. For the more adventurous, you can continue to Cima Rosetta at 2,700 m for breathtaking views. A mini-trek from the Colverde lifts also reaches Malga Pala, where you can savor polenta, Tosèla, and luganega in an authentic setting.
For family dining, Baita Colverde offers traditional dishes and quick snacks with a view of the Pale. At the Rosetta cableway arrival, bars and huts serve mountain cuisine and homemade desserts.
passo rolle, cavallazza
The Great War trek starts from the Paradiso chairlift and reaches the ridges of Piccola Cavallazza (2,305 m) and Cavallazza (2,322 m). The trail showcases First World War sites, with trenches and outposts still visible. The route has gentle elevation gain, suitable for school-age children; for younger kids, a child carrier backpack is recommended.
From Cavallazza, you can descend to Colbricon Lake (1,922 m) and follow the mule track back to the Paradiso chairlift. Malga Rolle, along the trail, offers traditional valley dishes and local cheeses. Reaching the lakes, Rifugio Laghi di Colbricon provides traditional mountain cuisine amidst stunning scenery.
