The deer is the undisputed king of our forests and the proud symbol of the park. If you’d like to see these magnificent animals up close, visit one of the two wildlife areas dedicated to them – one in Paneveggio, just beyond Passo Rolle, and the other in Caoria, in the Vanoi Valley.
Today these majestic animals roam freely throughout our forests. From just a handful that escaped the Paneveggio enclosure by chance in 1963, their numbers have risen to over 2,000. With the first cold days, when the larches turn golden and the forest is painted with autumn colours, the deer put on a show, filling the woods with deep calls, graceful movements and fierce battles between rival males.
Between late September and early October, the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Nature Park organises guided evening tours in the heart of the Paneveggio Forest – unique opportunities to witness this moving natural spectacle.
