HIS MAJESTY, THE DEER

The deer is the undisputed king of our forests and also the symbol of the Park! If you want to observe this magnificent animal up close, you can visit the two wildlife areas dedicated to it: one is in Paneveggio, accessible via Passo Rolle, and the other is in Caoria, in the Vanoi Valley.

In our woods, these majestic animals are naturally widespread: from the few specimens that accidentally escaped from the Paneveggio enclosure in 1963, today there are over 2,000! When the first cold arrives, larches turn golden, and the magic of the foliage begins, the deer put on a spectacular show, with deep calls, dances, and clashes with rival males during the mating season.

Between late September and early October, the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Natural Park organizes guided evening tours in the heart of the Paneveggio Forest: a unique opportunity to witness this thrilling ritual!

DEER WILDLIFE AREA IN PANEVEGGIO

Just a few steps from the Paneveggio Visitor Center, a large semi-natural enclosure hosts a group of majestic deer. Visiting the wildlife area is the perfect way to end a trip to the Visitor Center dedicated to the Violin Forest or a walk along the Marciò trail—a themed path open in both summer and winter, starting near the Visitor Center and leading into the heart of the Paneveggio Forest, including a crossing over the Travignolo Gorge on a suspended bridge.

DEER WILDLIFE AREA IN CAORIA

A few kilometers from the village of Caoria, in the Vanoi Valley, a four-hectare wildlife area has been created where numerous deer and roe deer live. Thanks to a raised wooden observation deck and informative boards provided by the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Natural Park, both adults and children can observe deer and roe deer up close and learn more about their habits and life in the wild.
