Located in a spectacular position in the heart of the Paneveggio – Pale di San Martino Nature Park, the Dolomiti UNESCO panoramic viewpoint is one of the most scenic observation points in the entire Dolomite range. From here, you can enjoy an unparalleled view embracing the Pale di San Martino group, the Lagorai range, and the Vette Feltrine—a true natural balcony overlooking the Dolomites, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
a place rich in history
The path leading to the balcony passes through an area steeped in memory: along the way, you can observe the remains of the historic Tognola Refuge and the old sled lift station, built in 1937 by Hermann Panzer, a pioneering entrepreneur of alpine tourism. After a brief suspension during World War II, the sled lift was temporarily reactivated in 1943 by the Germans, before being permanently abandoned.
how to reach the panoramic balcony
The panoramic viewpoint is easily accessible from San Martino di Castrozza with two options:
- From above: about 15 minutes on foot from the upper station of the Tognola cable car, along an easy panoramic trail.
- From below: about 1 hour and 30 minutes on foot along the historic Panzer trail, recently restored. The starting point is near the centre of San Martino di Castrozza.
