In 1914, Marc Bloch goes to war and, after four memorable and terrible years, he will emerge with the awareness of his craft as a historian. But his testimony can become general precisely because the author has chosen not to say anything he has not personally experienced. The war was a "vast experiment in social psychology," and the historian must learn to study it as such. The "miraculous renewal of oral tradition, the ancient mother of legends and myths," created a favorable environment for the fabrication and dissemination of the "fake news" that circulated in the trenches. Bloch unveils its pathways, identifying in the great collective moods the substratum that allows prejudices to transform a bad perception into legend.
