A jazz supergroup in the presence of the Pale di San Martino reinterprets the songs of Luigi Tenco.
Special project: Lontano lontano
The songs of Luigi Tenco, filled with melancholy, love, and silent courage, have left an indelible mark on the landscape of Italian music. These are songs that continue to speak to us and give voice to our anxieties, impervious to trends, changes in audience, and the technological evolution that has taken place since that tragic January 27, 1967, when Tenco, returning from an evening at the Sanremo Festival, said goodbye to life.
Those songs will return in the Giardino di Willa Welsperg, a splendid noble residence built in 1853, now home to the Parco Paneveggio Pale di San Martino. Reinterpreting them, with love, delicacy, and intensity, is Doctor 3, a trio formed in 1997 during the recording of its first album, The Tales of Doctor 3, which was judged the best Italian album of the year by Musica Jazz (which awarded the same recognition to the group two more times). An ensemble with a cross-sectional approach, as befits I Suoni delle Dolomiti, which combines true jazz with pop and songwriter sensibilities.
Danilo Rea, born in Vicenza and adopted by Rome, has made the piano his voice and improvisation his natural language. After graduating from the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia, he has shared the stage with jazz giants like Chet Baker, John Scofield, and Brad Mehldau, while also engaging with the great Italian song, from Mina to Gino Paoli, from Fiorella Mannoia to Claudio Baglioni, and collaborating with cinema and theater, from Carlo Verdone to Valerio Mastandrea.
On double bass, we find Enzo Pietropaoli, a Roman, with Rea, and with Roberto Gatto, since 1975, in the Trio di Roma. Pietropaoli, in his over forty-year career, has played with the greatest, from Lester Bowie to Lee Konitz, from Enrico Rava to Pat Metheny.
Finally, on drums, Fabrizio Sferra, another internationally acclaimed musician, has been in the jazz scene since childhood, co-founding the Space Jazz Trio in the early 80s with Pietropaoli and Enrico Pieranuzzi, and later performing alongside others like Chet Baker, Kenny Wheeler, and Paul Bley. In short, a supergroup for an unforgettable evening, dedicated to the great Italian song.
