At 1,631 metres above sea level, where the coniferous woods are still dense, the terrace of the Rifugio Treviso overlooks the upper Val Canali. But if you look up you’ll see the south faces of the Pale di San Martino: the Pala del Rifugio and - higher up - Sass d'Ortiga and Croda Granda; incredible though it may seem, on a clear day they can be seen from Venice. This stone refuge was built in 1897 by Dresden mountaineers, who called it the Canali Hütte. It was subsequently ceded to the SAT (Association of Trentino Mountaineers) and finally to the Treviso branch of CAI (Italian Mountaineering Club). The ascent from Val Canali is an easy, family walk; once you get there have a rest inside in the “larin”, the name given in these parts to the little room with a central raised open fire. Open Early June - mid-October Before leaving for your hike, always contact the manager to verify the actual opening of the mountain hut Walks From the refuge, the Via Ferrata del Canalone takes less than two hours (via ferrata kit required), while the walk up the upper Val Canali to Passo Canali takes 2 ½ hours (difficulty EE). Beyond Passo Canali, you can get to Cima Fradusta and the Rifugio Rosetta G. Pedrotti in 4 hours, or walk down to the Rifugio Pradidali in 5 hours (difficulty E). The Fiamme Gialle via ferrata to the Reali bivouac hut is more demanding, while Passo Cereda can be reached in 4 ½ hours down a relatively easy path.
