His Majesty the deer

Face to face with the king of the park

The deer is the undisputed king of these forests and the symbolic animal of the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Park.
Ungulates are naturally widespread in these areas: from the few specimens that fortuitously came out of the Paneveggio enclosure in 1963, there is now a population gravitating in the Cismon, Travignolo and Vanoi catchment areas that exceeds 2000 specimens. With the arrival of the first cold weather, when the woods turn shades of yellow, gold, red and brown and we witness the magic of fogliage, the deer put on a show, exhibiting themselves with deep yearnings, dances and clashes with other males, their rivals in love.
Seeing this majestic animal up close is easy, thanks to two wildlife areas dedicated to it, one at Paneveggio and one at Caoria, where numerous specimens live in semi-natural conditions.

DEER WILDLIFE AREA IN PANEVEGGIO

A few steps from the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Park Visitor Centreis this wildlife area.

The large enclosure houses, in semi-natural conditions, some specimens of ungulates and allows adults and children to see these magnificent animals up close. A visit to the wildlife area is the perfect way to end a walk along the Marciò trail, a themed trail that starts near the visitor centre and leads into the heart of the famous Paneveggio Forest - also known as the Violin Forest - with a suspension bridge over the Travignolo gorge.

DEER WILDLIFE AREA IN CAORIA

A few kilometres from the village of Caoria, in the Vanoi Valley, a wildlife area was created a few years ago where numerous deer and roe deer live. This is a four-hectare area, managed by the Pro Loco di Caoria with the collaboration of many volunteers, which, thanks to a raised wooden terrace and the presence of numerous information boards set up by the Parco Naturale Paneveggio Pale di San Martino, allows adults and children alike to see up close and learn something more about the habits and life of these magnificent ungulates.
