A few kilometers from the villages of Primiero, between 1,000 and 1,400 meters above sea level, opens the enchanting Val Canali, a wonderful alpine valley surrounded by nature, the heart of the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Park, which also offers the visitor center of Villa Welsperg, an ancient hunting residence owned by the accounts of the same name and now the main headquarters of the institution.
Val Canali, accessible all year round, is home to some of the most beautiful places in Trentino, such as the Welsperg lake, the Piereni meadows and the Malga Canali, while for those who love an active holiday it represents the most immediate access to the southern side of the Pale di San Martino that here stand out in the background with the unmistakable spires of Cimerlo, Sass Maor and Cima Canali.
Val Canali offers countless sights throughout the year with welcoming accommodation facilities and gourmet restaurants where you can enjoy high-level culinary experiences, to be combined with excursions to alpine huts or mid-altitude pastures and sensory experiences immersed in nature, such as the Tonadico-Cimerlo themed trails or the fedaie museums. Spring is particularly suggestive for an on-site stay, a period in which to appreciate the overbearing awakening of nature and autumn, characterised by the colours of foliage in a vegetation rich in broadleaves and larches. In summer, Val Canali is connected to the villages of Primiero with a special shuttle to allow you to fully enjoy contact with nature without using the car, respecting the peculiarities that have led Val Canali to be a flagship of the territory of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza, which since 2022 has been part of the Alpine Pearls circuit.
Going up from Primiero towards Val Canali, the view inevitably goes to the ruins of Castel Pietra, erected in medieval times on a large rock at the gates of the valley; they can be reached in the beautiful seasons with guided accompaniments of mountain guides or medium-mountain guides, to experience intense emotions dominating the views over the entire valley below. New: from summer 2025 it will also be possible to follow the new route that goes up from Primiero and passes right at the foot of Castel Pietra to reach the meadows of Villa Welsperg on foot or by ebike.
