Piani Eterni

The itinerary starts from the hamlet of Pante di Sagrón (1,025 m above sea level), where it is possible to comfortably park the car. After following the asphalt road downhill for a few hundred meters, at the hamlet of Casère, take a white road to the right indicating Forcella dell’Omo / Forzèla del’Òm. The track - which initially follows the thematic trail “Intrecci del Tempo” - becomes increasingly less visible and, after a slight descent into the forest of Val de le Móneghe and crossing the Torrente Pezzea (regional border and limit of the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park), enters the gorge of Val Mandrisset to begin an ascent of about 1,000m that leads to the pass. Trail signs are visible, but it is useful to be careful due to the scarce use of the track. The ascent of the gorge leading to Forcella dell’Omo is the most demanding part of this itinerary and, although it does not include particularly challenging or exposed sections, it is not recommended for inexperienced hikers. With a constant view of Piz de Sagrón (Dolomites of Cimonega) in the foreground, once the vegetation thins out, the ascent becomes very spectacular.

Once arrived at Forcella dell’Omo (1,946 m above sea level), located between Corno del Comedón and Monte Brandòl, the most physical part of the excursion will be behind you and the view of the vertical Dolomite walls of Piz de Sagrón gives way to a grassy ridge overhanging the Upper Val Canzoi. From the saddle, the trail takes a left onto Path No. 851 and climbs another hundred meters or so to reach a second pass (1,995 m above sea level), beyond which opens a large basin that radically changes the panorama, presenting a typical karst environment with soft terrain, pastures, and limestone rocks. The route continues along Path No. 851, descending into the center of the basin surrounded by a paradisiacal environment, along the meadows and streams of the Laghetti area, aiming towards Malga Errèra, visible in the distance.

Once at Malga Errèra (1,708 m above sea level) the vast karst plateau of the Piani Eterni opens up; a place of rare peace and beauty, striking at first glance for the extensive gray limestone surfaces. From the Malga, proceed with a slight ascent along the beautiful mule track of Path No. 802 towards California / Campotorondo, in a stretch shared with the trek “Alta Via Tilman”, which connects Falcade to Asiago, retracing the route taken by British Major Harold William Tilman in 1944. After crossing Forcella Pelse (1,847 m above sea level), the trail continues descending towards Campotorondo until reaching Casera Campotorondo (1,763 m above sea level), used as a bivouac and, with the Busa del Toro behind it, represents another glimpse of infinite beauty.

From the Casera continue along Path No. 802 “Alta Via Tilmann”, beginning a long section of the itinerary (about 5 km and 1,000 m of elevation loss) that descends the Valle Campotorondo to reach the locality of California di Gosáldo. Care is advised during this descent; although the mule track is wide and not technically difficult, it is often wet and slippery in sections (the valley is particularly humid and poorly exposed to the sun).

After the long descent, just before reaching the bed of the Torrente Mis, you arrive at the locality of i Sált (Gosaldo, Belluno), where you take a track on the left from the thematic trail of the Dolomiti Bellunesi Park “La montagna dimenticata” (the forgotten mountain), which explores the old gold and mercury mines of the Valle del Mis, passing through many ruins of old houses and abandoned pastures. Although the track has recently been improved, the signage is not the best, so it is useful to pay attention when taking the path in the direction of Vallalta / Sagron. After passing the locality of Vallalta (868 m above sea level), the trail passes some mine ruins and, after crossing the Torrente Pezzea, re-enters Trentino territory with an interesting passage at the old customs post (now a private residence). From the residence begins the asphalt road with a slight climb that follows the right side of the Valle del Mis, leading first to Marcói (941 m above sea level), then to Casère and finally to Pante di Sagrón.
