Cavallazza from Rolle: Malga Rolle - Laghetti Di Colbricón - Cavallazza - Cavallazza Piccola - Tognazza

This relatively short hiking route passes through one of the most iconic and visited places in all of Primiero, the easily reachable Laghetti di Colbricón. However, this is not the main focus of the route, which first leads to the summit of Cavallazza and then to the discovery of the World War I military tunnels on Cavallazza Piccola.

Start from the Malga Rolle parking lot (1,904 m asl), located a couple of hairpin bends below the Passo Rolle crossing, on the Val di Fiemme side. The first part of the route follows the beautiful mule track of Trail No. 348 towards the Laghetti di Colbricón, which begins a few hundred meters from the hut on the grassy basin Busa Ferrari. The mule track, relatively flat and immersed in the Paneveggio forest, leads in a couple of kilometers (shared with a section of the "Translagorai" TL and "Sentiero Italia" SI routes) to the Rifugio Laghi di Colbricón and the Laghetti di Colbricón (1,922 m asl). Due to the easy access to the lakes and the touristic nature of the place, this part of the hike is usually busy.

From Rifugio Laghi di Colbricón, follow the signs leading on a steep track over a slippery scree overlooking cliffs but never exposed, to the Summit of Cavallazza (2,324 m asl). From the summit, reachable by following an old trench on the right, begins the best part of the itinerary, which includes several panoramic points and World War I sites.

From the summit, the path continues downhill on the grassy slope to the west of the mountain towards Cavallazza Piccola and shortly reaches the junction at the small Forcella Cavallazza (2,226 m asl). From the junction, continue towards Cavallazza Piccola, on a trail overlooking the western side of the Pale di San Martino.

From Cavallazza Piccola (2,303 m asl) starts a trail that traverses the eastern side of the mountain; this characteristic section of the itinerary, very exposed but well protected by metal cables, leads to the military tunnels (called Stóli della Cavallazza). It is possible to reach the "Stóli" by avoiding this exposed section, going around the mountain by the trail west of the summit and reaching the tunnels from the north. The strategic position of the tunnels, built by the Austrians and later adapted by the Italian Engineering Corps in 1915, provided complete control over access to Passo Rolle.

After passing the outposts made up of tunnels and trenches, follow the visible tracks towards the Tognazza Summit (2,207 m asl). You cannot go wrong; it is the only possible route and the ski lift that reaches the summit is an additional point of reference. From Tognazza, simply descend along the Cimón ski slope that first returns to Passo Rolle and then, along the meadows, to the starting point.
