Francesco Schweizer - piano
The program offers a fascinating journey through the great repertoire for violin and piano, guiding us through three eras, three sensibilities, and three unique ways of dialoguing with these two instruments.
The concert opens with the Sonata in E minor K. 304 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Composed in 1778 in Paris - a period marked by the painful loss of his mother - it is the only sonata for violin by the composer written in a minor key. It is an intimate, tense, and essential piece, where classical elegance is tinged with deep melancholy and a foreboding sense of the future.
Next is the Sonata in A major D. 574 by Franz Schubert, known as the "Grand Duo." Written in 1817, when Schubert was just twenty years old, this sonata encapsulates all the freshness and lyricism of his youth. The dialogue between violin and piano here is of pure equality: the melodic lines intertwine naturally and expansively, gifting us with moments of great brightness and liederistic balance.
Closing the evening will be the Sonata no. 2 in A major op. 100 by Johannes Brahms. Composed in the summer of 1886 on the shores of Lake Thun in Switzerland, it is also known as the "Thuner" or "song" sonata, due to the clear references to the Lieder Brahms was writing at that time. It is a sunny, expansive, and poetic work, intimate yet rich in noble and nostalgic warmth.
Three masterpieces that tell the evolution of the chamber duo: from Mozart's composed sorrow, to Schubert's spontaneous expressiveness, to Brahms's mature poetry.
