Narrative reading group Andrea Zanzotto: "The Magic Mountain" by Thomas Mann.
The Magic Mountain is a faithful, complex portrait of Western civilization in the early decades of the twentieth century, set in a Swiss sanatorium, the famous Berghof in Davos. When the protagonist, the young Hans Castorp, arrives there, he is the typical northern German, a solid and respectable bourgeois; however, he has his spiritual curiosities and is intellectually open to adventure. In contact with the microcosm of the sanatorium, a true panorama of all the currents of thought of the time, his character undergoes an evolution and enhancement: he goes through illness, love, rationalism, the joy of living, and irrational pessimism, but amidst so many conflicting forces, Castorp finds his balance. In this world where time dissolves, the protagonist will stay at the mountain sanatorium considerably longer than expected.
