Gino Castaldo presents “The Music is Over. Notes for a Revolution” (HarperCollins).

A tool for understanding the present and imagining the future, restoring to music its most authentic dimension: that of an art capable of moving, uniting, and standing the test of time.

The music we have known and loved in the twentieth century is still alive or has it completed its evolutionary cycle, making way for a new, mysterious horizon? Gino Castaldo, one of the most authoritative music critics in Italy, guides us on a journey through the most powerful mutation of the musical phenomenon in recent decades; a transformation that concerns not only sounds but the entire creative process, the ways of production, distribution, and consumption. From analog to digital, from vinyl to streaming platforms, up to the emergence of artificial intelligence, this book explores how technology has redefined our relationship with music, transforming it from a collective experience to individual consumption, from imperfect and vibrant art to perfectly packaged product. Castaldo invites the audience to reflect on the most authentic meaning of music: with his unmistakable ability to intertwine pop culture and critical analysis, he leverages intentionally provocative writing and does not merely describe changes; he questions them, challenges them, and recounts them with passion and depth.

Gino Castaldo, one of the most well-known music critics in Italy, has been a journalist for La Repubblica since the newspaper's foundation in 1976. During his career, he has interviewed all the giants of music and curated numerous editorial initiatives for the Gruppo Espresso. Together with Ernesto Assante from 2011 to 2017, he hosted Playlist on Radio Capital, was the author of music programs on Radio Tre, and for Radio 2 conducted important cycles of musical narratives, while from 2018 to 2025 he co-hosted with Ema Stokholma Back2back on Rai Radio 2. Among his most recent books are The Novel of Italian Song (Einaudi, 2018), Lucio Dalla (Mondadori, 2021) co-written with Ernesto Assante, The Sky Was Burning with Stars. The Magical Season of Italian Singer-Songwriters (Mondadori, 2023), The Boy of the Century (HarperCollins, 2025), and lastly The Music is Over. Notes for a Revolution (HarperCollins, 2026). For over ten years, he has been bringing his musical narratives to theaters, telling the stories of the big names in Italian and international music in a blend of words and music.
