Ulysses, the hero of the Achaeans with a protean intellect, devised the stratagem of the Trojan horse to end the ten-year siege of the city and finally conquer it. The victory allows him to set sail for home, to the island of Ithaca, but his fleet encounters various misfortunes and his journey leads him to confront supernatural threats, visit the Underworld, and a long stop on the island of the nymph Calypso. Meanwhile, his son Telemachus, now grown, tries to protect his mother Penelope and the throne of Ithaca from the suitors who press forward as contenders for the queen left without a husband. Among them, Antinous, aided by Penelope's servant, Melantho, dangerously threatens Penelope.
