Monte Totóga

From Passo Gòbbera, the route initially takes the easy dirt road westward (initially marked as Trail No. 345), ascending slightly along the north side of Monte Totóga. In this first part, you can observe the remains of the so-called Calchèra, a kiln used for lime production and active until 1950. From here, the path continues westward towards Còl de la Crós. The road proceeds with a gentle incline towards Còl de la Crós (1,083 m a.s.l.), reachable shortly while rejoining Trail No. 345, which ascends from the village of Lausén up to the summit of Monte Totóga.

The walk follows Trail No. 345 that runs along the west side of the mountain. Crossing some valleys, the path has a couple of exposed and scenic rocky sections, easily passable thanks to safety installations. After these sections, the steepest part of the itinerary begins, leading to the area of the remains of the village of Masi de Totóga (1,376 m a.s.l.), once surrounded by their open pastures and now reduced to ruins. After a short climb, you reach the meadows of Pradi de Totóga Alta (1,402 m a.s.l.), also accessible via a dirt road ascending from Val di Schenèr, well known for mountain biking due to its 48 (!) hairpin bends. From the meadow junction, the route continues ascending toward Monte Totóga (NW) along Trail No. 345B, crossing the area of Pradi de Totóga Alta until reaching the bivouac San Giovanni Gualberto (1,570 m a.s.l.), with its side structure (forest house) always open and perfect for a break before the last ascent.

From the forest house, you reach in a few meters the Great War military posts called Stóli di Totóga (1,586 m a.s.l.), a system of artificial tunnels built by the Italian army during the First World War to protect against a possible advance of Austro-Hungarian troops from Val di Vanoi. The tunnels are visitable. They are built on two levels, with seven main halls overlooking directly Val di Vanoi and Monte Cauriòl, and four smaller internal halls. There are suggestive vertical connecting passages that may require particular attention.

From the forest house, the final short ascent follows Trail No. 345A, which narrows and enters the forest before reaching Cima Totóga (1,705 m a.s.l.) with its cross, where a small clearing allows you to admire the landscape, with the Primiero Valley and Monte Vederna on one side, and Val di Vanoi and Lagorai on the other, separated by the deep ravine of Val di Schenèr.

From Cima Totóga, the return to Passo Gobbera initially follows the same path (Trail No. 345A), passing again near the bivouac San Giovanni Gualberto and reaching the junction at the place called Le Monde (1,499 m a.s.l.), where you continue leftward, southeast, still following Trail No. 345A towards Passo Gobbera. The chosen descent path is more direct and descends quite steeply toward the mountain pass on the east side of Monte Totóga. Upon reaching the junction at El Ram (1,384 m a.s.l.), you return to the main trail (Trail No. 345) which continues leftward toward Passo Gobbera. After another pleasant steep descent, at the junction called Bivio de le Doi Strade (1,045 m a.s.l.) the path turns into a pleasant dirt road, lessening the slope. Right at the junction above is the picturesque church of San Silvestro, which the itinerary does not touch but can be glimpsed to your right (east) beyond the forest. Continuing along the road and passing again near the Calchèra encountered at the start, the path gently returns to Passo Gobbera.
