The United States of America has become a corrupt totalitarian regime in which the average citizen is afflicted by economic collapse and high crime rates. Ben Richards struggles to afford healthcare costs for his sick daughter and once unemployed and blacklisted, he chooses to try to obtain all the money needed to support his family by participating in the television competition The Running Man, where contestants become fugitives sent across the nation and win a substantial cash prize if they survive for 30 days avoiding being killed by a group of shady special agents.
